For 90 years, the Antarctic Treaty System has ensured international peace and scientific cooperation in Antarctica.

Now, that treaty has expired and its signatories must reckon with the significant challenges that climate change, resource extraction, and territorial ambition pose to the Antarctic status quo.

Japan was one of the 12 original signatories of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959 and has conducted significant scientific research in Antarctica for decades. Japan currently makes no territorial claim to Antarctic soil, though it has maintained a permanent research presence in Antarctica since 1957.

Your committee is composed of representatives from across Japan’s political, business, and scientific communities.

Your task will be to ensure that Japan’s geopolitical, scientific, and economic interests in the Antarctic are protected, by any means necessary.

Will Antarctica remain a continent defined by peaceful scientific cooperation?

Or will the challenges of a new world drive it into conflict?

Rules and Procedure

This committee follows parliamentary procedure as defined in our Crisis Committee Parley Pro Document. However, procedure during committee may be modified at the Moderator’s discretion.

Position Paper

All delegates wishing to be considered for an award must submit a position paper before the start of conference. Position paper quality will be included in consideration of awards, however paper quality will not hold as much weight in award consideration as actual committee performance. Position papers are meant to ensure a basis for delegate research and help delegates feel confident while participating during the conference.
