The Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Issues (SOCHUM) committee is one of six main General Assembly committees. As its name suggests, this committee focuses on addressing various inequities, supporting vulnerable populations, and humanitarian efforts.
SOCHUM is generally a larger committee and covers a wide array of topics. Previously, this committee has covered the challenges of rare diseases, children’s rights, Palestinians’ right to self-determination, and more.
Although they are native to their land, Indigenous populations frequently have higher rates of poverty, discrimination, violence, and malnutrition imposed on them. With worsening economic and environmental conditions, Native rights must be supported
LGBTQ+ individuals also face a myriad of social, legal, economic, and other challenges. Due to discrimination and a lack of legal protection, they are thoroughly harmed and the UN has started advocating for this global community relatively recently.

Rules and Procedure
This committee follows parliamentary procedure as defined in our Standard Committee Parley Pro Document. However, procedure during committee may be modified at the Chair’s discretion.
Position Paper
All delegates wishing to be considered for an award must submit a position paper before the start of conference. Position paper quality will be included in consideration of awards, however paper quality will not hold as much weight in award consideration as actual committee performance. Position papers are meant to ensure a basis for delegate research and help delegates feel confident while participating during the conference.
Detailed instructions for writing and submitting Position Papers can be found in the Position Paper Guidelines Document.
