1993: the chess world faces a debilitating fork, between their king and kingmaker.
Mere months before the World Championships, current world champion Garry Kasparov has split from FIDE, the world’s foremost chess association. Alongside his would-be challenger, English grandmaster Nigel Short, he has established the rival Professional Chess Association. In retaliation, FIDE has re-captured Kasparov’s title and vowed to find a new champion.
Now, both organisations are at a stalemate, battling to legitimize their stature. One has the advantage of a storied historical legacy, but the other mounts a dangerous counter-attack with the support of many prominent chess professionals.
As the Professional Chess Association, we must move fast and decisively in order to establish our claim to arbitrate chess on a global scale. In an age with mechanical and technological developments, political turmoil in the wake of the Cold War and the ever-present antics of historical chess legends, what tactics will we use to rise to the echelons of chess supremacy and checkmate FIDE?
Your move.
