The early 19th century was marked by Napoleon's quest for a French dominated Europe. Portugal, the lone ally of the British empire on the continent was targeted by France and its ally, Spain, for refusing to cede its territory to France. The Spanish and Portuguese have a long history of political conflict. Spain and Portugal even shared a dynastic union for sixty years. Eventually, the Portuguese Restoration War established Portugal’s sovereignty. The animosity between Portugal and Spain has been building for quite a long time, and has only been hastened by France’s conquest of Europe. France and Spain seek to conquer Portugal, effectively growing their dominance in Europe and undermining Portugal’s relations with Britain. It is also worth noting that despite being allies, both France and Spain seem to have hidden agendas. It’s April 1801, and the French and Spanish have just arrived in Portugal. Everything seems to going well for the allies, but will they be able to maintain their alliance or will they turn on each other? How are Spain’s internal affairs playing out at this time, especially in relation to a certain commander and queen? And what is with that obsession with oranges? Get ready, for war is upon you.
