Following the assassination of Rafael Trujillo, the Dominican Republic has been facing a period of political instability and power struggles. Under his 31 year rule, the people of the Dominican Republic faced a life of poverty and authoritarian control and lived in fear of Trujillo’s secret police who enforced his tyranny. Immediately following his death Trujilo’s son, Ramfis Trujillo took control of the country, however, his attempt to rule was not successful as he faced strong opposition and was sent into exile. Joaquín Balaguer, the puppet president under Trujillo’s final few years of power, is currently in control of the government and has promised to democratize the country and hold multiparty elections this year. The time for these elections are approaching and this could mean new era for the Dominican Republic, but there have been many attempts of multiple individuals and political parties to take control of the country. The lack of trust between the Dominican people and its government has made it difficult to elect and keep politicians in office. Will the Dominican Republic embark on a new path as a democratic state, or will the country return to being under autocratic rule?
