For the last 40 years, Chile has endured a tumultuous political history. In the 1920s, the working and middle class wer finally able to instate a reformist leader in Arturo Alessandri after many years of oligarchical presidents who only protected the interests of their counterparts and themselves. Nevertheless, the still conservative congress prevented much of the change that Alessandri wanted to make, and a military coup removed him from his position, starting a nearly 10-year period of insatiable military leadership. During this time, marxist sentiments began to grow throughout the population. The Radical Party got hold of the presidency for 20 years, but by the 1950s, conservative leadership was reinstated with Jorge Alessandri, son of Arturo. He was succeeded by Eduardo Frei Montalva, a Christian Democrat who is ideologically moderately left, but there are suspicions, especially by Chileam socialists, that his 1964 win is not an honest one. There are rumors that the United States has been intervening in his election and funding the spread of anti-Allende propganda, Frei’s marxist opponent. Some are calling to question the integrity of the Chilean electoral system. Strikes are gaining traction. Calls to action are spreading. Will Frei get to maintain his power, or will his administration admit to foreign bribery?
