On August 15,1945, when the voice of Emperor Hirohito reverberated throughout the air for the first time, the 8-year Sino-Japanese war finally ended. The Japanese surrender unveiled a fractured nation aspiring for unity yet holding onto deeply rooted divisions. The KMT, led by General Chiang Kai-shek and the CCP helmed by Mao Zedong faced off along the Yellow River while navigating the increasing hostility. With pressures mounting from other moderate political parties and abroad, an official ceasefire agreement was signed on January 10th, 1946, and the Political Consultative Conference in Chongqing was promised to discuss the drafting of a new Constitution, the organization of a new federal government and demilitarization. However, nothing is what it seems with CCP further consolidating its foothold in the Northeast and the internal division in KMT’s National Congress, all while rampant poverty, runaway inflation and complex post-war geopolitics plagues the nation. Will this conference mark the end of China’s century of humiliation or will it plunge our motherland into further chaos? Join us on this historical journey to redefine the soul of China.
